Internship position: Conflict Analyst

Elva Community Engagement (www.elva.org) helps peacebuilding and stabilization organizations to collect, visualize and analyse reliable field data from hard-to-reach communities in conflict-affected areas in a responsible and sustainable manner.

From Eastern Ukraine to Syria and the Sahel, our ability to provide high-resolution, real-time data and trend analysis has unlocked better targeted and effective interventions for a range of different partners, from humanitarian organizations to local governments and peacebuilders.

Our work is being recognised and supported by leading international organisations including the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the European Union and other donors.

Where we work

Based in The Netherlands and Georgia, our work takes us to different conflict-affected areas in Africa, Asia, the Middle East and Europe. Amongst others, we have worked on the following topics:

  • Monitoring violent extremism in the Lake Chad region: mapping the influence of violent extremist organizationsin Nigeria, Chad, Niger and Cameroon.
  • Monitoring conflict and reconciliation trends in Syria: mapping data from local communities on violent incidents and attacks across the country, to achieve a fine-grained understanding of the drivers of local security trends and dynamics, as well as local peace and reconciliation efforts.
  • Monitoring community safety needs in Eastern Ukraine: working with a network of local community residents to monitor local security dynamics and incidents, and to work with local security providers to jointly address reported needs and concerns.

Your activities will be:

  • Assisting in the analysis of survey data and eyewitness reports from communities affected by violent extremism and conflict (mostly Africa and the Middle East).
  • Designing and implementing digital survey forms for collecting eyewitness reports on conflict incidents, community safety needs and violent extremism
  • Providing support in further improving the design of our online conflict and risk mapping tools.
  • Help drafting project proposals and reports to clients.
  • Carrying out basic statistical analysis on survey data for different projects.
  • Providing ad-hoc assistance on other running projects.
  • Carrying out administrative tasks.

Required skills and experience:

  • Working towards or holding a degree in Conflict Studies, International Relations, Political Science, Data Analysis, or any discipline relevant to the above duties.
  • Advanced proficiency in written and spoken English. Knowledge of French an asset.
  • Passionate about the use of new technologies in conflict management.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work with teams from a distance and meet goals and deadline independently.

Practical information

  • The position is part-time (8-16 hours per week) and can be carried out from Elva’s office in The Hague and/or remotely.
  • Duration: 3-6 months, depending on candidate’s availability and upcoming projects
  • Starting date: April 2019
  • We will provide a financial compensation that is in line with local standards and the part-time nature of the position.
